This morning, I opened my favourite bible app to see the following as the verse of the day.
Acts 20:24
‘Even so, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.’
Now this is a popular verse to quote, particularly in evangelical circles. It’s used to rouse us all to greater zeal in the sharing of the gospel. To encourage us to be eager to charge into the fray of evangelism.
Unfortunately this verse has never had that effect on me.
Instead I find myself comparing my walk with God to the Apostle Paul’s and his world changing energy, and I simply do not match up. All too often I find that I am firmly on the throne of my life, and the desire to preach the good news of the gospel ranks somewhere along with emptying my bins.
The struggle for lordship and my devotion is real.
However, the verse ends with a reference to God’s grace. So, I would like to offer an alternative verse for the day. To all those who turn cold at the above verse or are temporarily weary, let me recommend.
Hebrews 4:16
‘So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.'
Have a blessed and glorious day.
